In commemoration of Constitution Day, Patrick J. Deneen, Ph.D., will deliver a talk titled “The Two Constitutions” on September 19, 2023, at 7 p.m. in the Driscoll Auditorium at Holy Cross College. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Deneen is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, where he also holds the David A. Potenziani Memorial Chair of Constitutional Studies. He earned a B.A. in English literature and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University. Prior to joining the faculty of Notre Dame in 2012, he taught at Princeton University (1997-2005) and at Georgetown University (2005-2012), where he held the Markos and Eleni Tsakapoulos-Kounalakis Chair in Hellenic Studies. From 2005-2007 he also served as principal Speechwriter and Special Assistant to the Director of the U.S. Information Agency, Joseph Duffey.
In 1995, Dr. Deneen was awarded the American Political Science Association’s Leo Strauss Award for Best Dissertation in Political Theory. He then received an honorable mention for APSA’s Best First Book Award in 2000. Additionally, he has been awarded research fellowships from Princeton University, the Earhart Foundation, and the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Deneen’s fields of study include political theory and constitutional studies, and his research and teaching interests include ancient and modern political thought, American political thought, American constitutionalism literature and politics, and religion and politics. He is the author and editor of several books and numerous articles and reviews, and he has delivered guest lectures around the world.
