I have taught theology at Holy Cross for 12 years. My areas of focus include moral theology, the history of penance, the ethics of war and peace, and the Catholic social tradition. I also co-edited a book on health care, medicine and social justice, entitled “In the Company of the Poor.”

I joined the theology department at Holy Cross College in 2011 after teaching theology for four years in a Young Catholic Scholars program for a Newman Center. My areas of research and teaching focus on the intersection between faith and popular culture/music/movies, and faith and popular religion (the use of religious statues/medals/art in ordinary settings). I can’t wait to help our summer scholars learn to see how Jesus (the Logos) is hidden in many forms of media—even secular/non-religious media—and to help them learn about the benefits, as well as the unsuspected traps, for using media in evangelization and the new evangelization. When I’m not in the classroom, I can be found in the streets of South Bend playing old time American music with my two daughters and two sons on guitars, banjos, harmonicas, and violins.

I have enjoyed teaching courses on theology, peacemaking, spirituality, J.R.R. Tolkien, cinema and integral ecology at Holy Cross College since the spring of 2017. I have earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in theology from the University of Notre Dame and I am currently a student in the Doctor of Ministry Program in the Divinity School at Duke University. From 2001-2007, I taught and served in Campus Ministry at Red Cloud High School, a Jesuit school on the Pine Ridge Reservation and for years I have been involved in the work of the Catholic Peace Fellowship, Common Goods Co-operative Grocery, the Notre Dame Master of Divinity Program, the Satellite Theology Education Program at ND and the Catholic Worker. Since 2012, I have also worked for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend as a Catechist promoting Catholic Social Doctrine, coordinator of Social Ministries and as an officer for ecumenical and interreligious relations. I live with my wife and five children at our urban homestead Blessed Jägerstätter Farm in South Bend. I delight in listening to and performing music as well as coaching and watching baseball. I look forward to encountering those God is calling to embark on the journey to becoming saints and scholars this summer.

Hello, my name is Carl Loesch and I serve as the Secretary for Pastoral Ministries and Catechesis for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. In my 27 years in Catholic education, I have also served as a Catholic high school principal, Theology teacher, wrestling coach, and service coordinator. I earned my BA and MA in Theology from the University of Notre Dame as well as a M.Ed. and Masters in School Administration also from the University of Notre Dame. My wife, Marie, and I have four boys. I am grateful to my parents who sacrificed to give me and my six brothers and sisters the blessing of 119 years of Catholic education.
